I appreciate the emphasis on sacrifice and the attempt to root masculinity in Christ rather than in cultural or self-centered models. That instinct is important, and the Cross absolutely reveals that love is willing to give itself for others. At the same time, I think it’s important not to reduce masculinity simply to sacrifice as a single defining essence. In Catholic teaching, virtue is more integrated than that—manhood is not only about self-gift, but also about justice, prudence, fortitude, and charity lived in right order. Sacrifice is essential, but it flows from love, not as the total definition of love or masculinity itself.
This is a solid caveat for sure. I do believe sacrifice to be the bedrock upon which true masculinity can be built, but it's neither the only thing nor sufficient on its own. Thank you for reading Victoria!
Do you think humility is the essential heart posture for a man to properly understand sacrifice? I am thinking of Philippians 2 - "humbled himself to the point of death". I can imagine a scenario where a man tries to make sacrifices without killing the pride in his heart.
This is a great post, as always. Thank you for your work.
Honestly, with all due respect to men, I think the word sacrifice is far more feminine than it is a definition of masculinity. I could sit here and list all the reasons behind this, but I’ll leave that to you to reflect on, based on your surroundings and the people you look up to.
And when it comes to religion, we should treat it as a symbol. Really focus on that word. It’s something you work on; it’s not something you’re simply born with the way you portrayed it to be men’s nature. No one is born with it. It’s about discipline, morals, and the actions you choose to live by.
To me, sacrifice can almost define women as a whole, and I’d even say it’s sometimes something they’re naturally inclined toward, not because of Mother Mary, but because of the way women have been, from ages ago until now.
You've failed to grasp, in dying for them, you have died for you. You've died for higher ideals, for higher purpose. You've given your life in payment for a better world for all. However, your comment and attitude demonstrates this truth above all.
You will die jut ad the rest. But You've chosen to die on the sinking ship with all those men you declare are ******, oh the irony.
Are you perfect? Do you not contribute to death, chaos and immorality? Your purchases declare you do. You, in the same light, are the same as them. Your ego is what declares you are not, yet, you are very much off the world. Your words declared it so brazenly, demonstrating all that's spoke of. Not masculinity, but you are the anti-thesis of it. The monsters who perpetuate mankind's descent into hell.
I understand the importance of your words as not only true but sorely needed by men of these times.
However the same holds for women who raise children and sacrifice themselves, suffering to let go so that their children may reach their potentials.
Just as Christ willingly suffered for his passion, his mother Mary did the same.
Very true, sacrifice might be a universal calling/virtue
Yes.
Think about the implications if it weren’t universal.
Beautifully wrote and completely truthful. Thank you for taking the time to write this.
Thank yuo for the kind words brother, glad you liked the article. God bless you!

Yes, 100%, but it's humility combined with fortitude and courage as well.
