You Won't Ever See the End of War
But that's no reason to despair.
Only the dead have seen the end of war.
— George Santayana
It is true that we were given a perfect paradise, and chose to turn it into hell. That’s on us.
It’s difficult to look at the world around us and feel anything but great despair. We see governments betraying their own people, the wonders of old desecrated and destroyed, the sons of Europe emasculated and her daughters raped and abused. Laws that trample freedom and black boots pressing on the necks of those who want nothing else but to save their culture and preserve their heritage.
We’ve failed as men. We’ve failed to do our duty. We got caught up in social media, pointless entertainment and celebrity dramas, and we let the spirit of evil get too far. We let it enter our families, our communities, our cities and our nations. We looked away when the warning signs were there and we decided that watching sports was more important than stepping up and speaking up against the abuses of power and the degeneracy that were starting to run rampant.
I too have been consumed by resentment. Against myself, against mankind, and against all of us, as people who deserve no salvation. I have let myself believe in the futility of it all, and looked around hopeless at a world that needs to burn.
And now we look at our cities on fire and it feels as though we’re doomed. It’s easy to fall into despair, guilt, and believe the lies of an enemy that is never stronger than the God we fight for.
The enemy wants us to believe that we fight for a lost cause. He wants us to lie down and take it, to retreat in fear and let the gates of hell take over all the beauty that is left.
But even though it might feel as though we’ve already lost, we can find strength in knowing that God’s people have always overcome impossible odds. There’s been nothing but war after the fall, with brief periods of peace in between which are just long enough to make us forget that our battles only end when Our Lord calls us to Him.
The reality of life after the fall is war. And yet, wars can be won. While we won’t ever be free from struggle, not even at times of peace, we can give our struggle a purpose. We can remember to set our gaze on Heaven and walk forward into the fire, so we can at least accept the fight we’ve been given.
Even if this world will never be paradise again, we can make it a little bit better. No one, not even all of us can save the world as a whole. The world is already fallen, but our duty is not to save the world, our duty is to look at what’s there in front of us, and to do what’s right even if it won’t bring us back to Eden.
We do it because it’s enough to save one life. We do it because maybe we can make the world a little less dark. We do it because even if we won’t ever save the world from sin, our actions matter, and we can push back the darkness and create a world that is brighter.
Because even in the most terrible of darkness, when evil holds clear power over us, and pride and arrogance and envy have poisoned the hearts of most, whatever spark of good is left is always enough to justify us fighting back.
Anything else but this would be to surrender like cowards and stab God in the back.
And while it seems that the lights of this world are dimming and it feels too close to the end of time, God promises us that Justice will be served. And it’s never too late to change our ways and redirect the course of our lives towards all that’s good, strong and pure, and lead our people out of darkness and into a brighter future that reflects the glory of the past.
