Your thoughts on detaching from the world come across less like giving up and more like learning to hold things with an open hand. Life keeps changing whether we want it to or not, and you’re acknowledging that the heart can’t survive that weight without looking beyond it.

I appreciate how you end your piece by turning toward hope rather than fear. You’re leaving space for the possibility that God really can heal what time cracks, that eternity is not just a concept but a home, and that love doesn’t have to stop at the edge of life.

Over the last few months, on the occasion of entering the third third of life, I've spent some quiet time reflecting on the end of This Chapter and your words capture beautifully the sorrow and the joy set before us.

I believe the ways we engage with God and each other matter a great deal more than the things of this world. To the degree I can live this out over the time I have left on earth, I will be holding secular things loosely, and the my attachment will be to eternity.

Thank you for reading Dan, I appreciate the support and really glad you think the article captures the complex, nostalgic combination of sorrow and joy. Holding secular things loosely and attaching ourselves to eternity is a great way to put it.

God bless you brother and thanks for reading again!

Great article Juan. I think of this often too - how I will feel on my deathbed. What I will think about. Who I will remember. Whether I will be smiling. If I will be full of regret for all the things I didn't do. If I wish I had spoken more with my family and made more time for them. If I was too selfish and pursued only the things I wanted because I was hell-bent on living the best life I could. I wonder how things will turn out for me.

What I do know is that I am building a closer relationship with God. It is something I left on the side for a few years and I was deeply unhappy with life. I am now making an active effort to pray, read the Bible, and say the Rosary with my girlfriend. It means a lot to me that I with somebody who practices their faith - and reminds me how important it is.

Not really sure what I wanted to say here, but I enjoy reading this and you are doing some great work my friend. Keep it up! I have bookmarked more of your stuff to read on here and am curious about your books.

I've found that meditating on our worldly end really helps put things in perspective and switch our focus towards the things that truly matter. We might not know what will happen in the end, but at least remembering our death can help us live the present better.

So glad to hear you're building a stronger relationship with God brother, it's the most important thing after all! And glad you're finding value in the articles, I really appreciate you being here!

God bless you!

We've gone to several funerals in 2025; mostly people who I've known most of my life and who played a large role in forming the person I am now. I remember telling my wife after one of them this year that, by deciding to continue living here, I was basically signing up to bury everyone who helped raise me. And I was sad about that, lamenting it in fact. And my wife simply said, "This isn't our home, and each funeral we go to is a reminder of that fact. We're supposed to be pilgrims passing through."

What a beautiful thing your wife said, and it really hits hard. Earth is not our home.

Beutifull! Much need in this busy Godless society, most people get so hooked up on plessure, stuff, worries with things that only move us way from salvation! Just keep writing brother in Christ, pour your heart out, God Be with you and your family always! May God Keep shining His Light on your path to end of your time! Be well, be Blessed!

Amen brother, well said! It's becoming more and more important to be able to stop for a moment, give it to God, and truly be present so we can enjoy this life without becoming attached to the wrong things and keep our gaze on eternity. I appreciate your kinds words a lot Antonio, they really mean a lot. God bless you too my friend!

Love this Juan! I think you're pinpointing one of the main reasons why humans fear death. I notice these wordly attachements from time to ime and they are hurting more than before I became a Christian. But it's hope and healing that will bring us closer to heaven and it's a relief in those nostalgic moments. Thanks again for your writing!

Simple Man's avatar

Yeah brother, that's exactly it. I think that's why Christ reminds us so frequently to detach from the things of the world, because we won't be able to take them with us. It's a difficult thing for sure, but absolutely necessary.

Glad you liked the article brother! Thank you for reading and God bless you

Perhaps if He would actually see the plight of man and remove the wicked from their midst, there would be a bit more faith. Instead He leaves us broken, despondent, hurt and abused, waiting for the chance to get His piece.
