As Sam and Frodo lay upon the slopes of Mount Doom after the destruction of the Ring, Sam thought of all the simple pleasures he had left behind in the Shire. His sacrifice (for he didn't think he would make it out alive) was worth it to him, because he knew what he was fighting for.
The good adventure into the wild is made in service of what is left behind: the fire in the hearth, the warm meal upon the table, the smiles of our families, and eternal life. Would that we all remember this and strive accordingly.
I agree that we are at war and must fight the good fight, but I cling to his promised return. I keep oil in my lamp, and I stay close to Jesus, knowing that he is coming as a thief in the night.
"Maybe then there will be virtuous wives for every man and honorable men for every woman. For us, there might be only war."
"Our duty is to fight. If we are to give our children the freedom we strive for, we can’t cowardly retreat and abandon the fight. We must sacrifice our own peace and choose total war. Only then, perhaps, will your sons and daughters see the open sky again."
