Do Your Job and Let God Do His
The "law of attraction" and why some things just aren't yours to control.
The Law Of Attraction Days
Perhaps the single most important lesson I learnt in the process of reclaiming my faith in Christ was to let go of the tyrannical need for control I had let enslave me.
I started reading about the law of attraction when I was 14 years old. I read the book “The Secret”, and made it my life philosophy, and tried to get myself to really believe in the power of manifestation, thinking hard about all the things I wanted, and trying to convince myself that I could bring about every single one of my wildest, most childish dreams. This became my religion.
The so-called law of attraction is a concept that, while now completely perverted and exaggerated to the point of absurdity in an effort to market it to the masses, hides behind the outlandish and obviously false claims it makes some truths that make it worth understanding. By the way, if you don’t know what the law of attraction is, read this:
The main problem I now see with the law of attraction as it is marketed is that people think it’s some sort of magical, “energetic”, “spiritual” concept of manifestation of realities through the power of “thought energy”, simply because making it sound mystical and magical makes it easier to sell. The law of attraction, the actual, real one, is nothing of the sort. Let me explain.
The Reality Of “Manifestation”
Our thoughts do have power: in shaping how we act and feel. And that, in turn, affects the life we live. So yes, it is real that thinking positively and keeping a clear picture of your dream in mind will increase the likelihood of it becoming a reality, but not because “thought energy” commands it be that way, but because you’ll probably end up actively working towards making that dream a reality. The law of attraction is just a way of saying there’s a deep relationship between the things you think about and how you behave in the material world.
Thoughts shape actions that shape results that shape your life.
Anything other than understanding the law of attraction like this will run directly against Christianity, because believing in dogmas that claim you are the one who holds power over everything that happens means to remove God from the equation, or reduce the immensity of God to nothing more than a heavenly vending machine in which you put thoughts in and receive their counterpart in the material world.
You can make things happen in the real world by focusing on them fully, and then putting in the action to accomplish them. This is how it’s been since the beginning of time. It’s only in our postmodern world that some have decided to repackage this very simple concept to create a new cult and fill their pockets by overpromising.
The Reality Is This:
The truth of the matter is that while we do have, of course, the power to lead our lives, walk in the paths we want to walk in and directly impact the world, one thing the law of attraction fails to tell you, and it’s pretty important, is that you are not in charge of the world, nor do you have ultimate power to direct its fate.
God is the only one who does, and anything other than fully accepting this leads to idolatry, arrogance, and control issues. Very often, all you can and should do is let go, trust God, and accept whatever comes.
You have a job, and playing god is not part of that job description. Your job is to try to serve God first and foremost, to refrain from committing sin, to believe in Jesus Christ and His promise of salvation, to uphold the commandments set by The Lord, and work hard to be a proper masculine leader in your house and community.
Drop The Need to Control Everything
I can’t even begin to tell you how much this mindset shift has helped me. When you realize you have in your corner the most powerful, one true God, and that He cares, loves you, and has a plan for you, stress and anxiety suddenly stop having any power over you.
When you can simply surrender your efforts to the will of God, and with complete honesty accept that the results that may or may not come your way are His to determine, you will feel a peace you won’t find anywhere else.
And the beauty of all this is that God delivers. He listens. He knows. He knows what you want in your heart, and if it’s righteous, honest, and in line with His plan, He will probably deliver it to you.
But it’s ultimately up to HIM, not up to you, as the law of attraction claims.
Leap Of Faith
That’s what true faith is: to not fall prey to anxiety and self-doubt because you know God has got your back, and He’s directing you. To know you don’t have to have it all figured out because you have the most powerful ally possible.
Now, you cannot let this be an excuse not to work hard and pursue your dreams. With this newfound faith, your actions shouldn’t change: you should still be trying to accomplish the things you want to accomplish by taking focused, purposeful action.
But the beauty of faith is that while you’ll be acting in the same way as you were before, you will now do it with less anxiety, less self-doubt, less control issues, less stress, and a brighter heart. Because you’ll know that your work only goes so far, and the rest is up to God. And God is perfect, so He has a perfect plan for you. How amazing is that?
Do your job, and let Him do His.
