A Man's Role
Find meaning in doing your duty.
How Lost We Are
Look at the men around you, and you’ll see in their eyes that they are lost. They live lives very often devoid of any meaning, drifting from one place to the next and from one idea to the other without any intentionality, without putting any thought into what they are doing, and without stopping to consider who they want to be, or rather, who they should try to become.
I don’t exclude myself from that group of men. I’ve been trying to find answers for a long time, and trying to remove from my heart all the influences of a postmodern world that doesn’t care too much if a man ends up isolated, lost, and purposeless.
I have come to understand that the crisis of masculinity stems, among other things, from a great ignorance of how a man ought to be, or more precisely, what a man’s duty is in the greater scheme of things.
A man needs to understand what his role is if he’s to fulfill it. He needs to understand what responsibilities he has and what others expect from him. He needs to understand how he can be the best man possible for those he loves.
And I’ve found out that this is a conversation most men aren’t having. Nobody is telling them how they should act, or what things are central to their ability to perform as men in a hostile world.
I truly believe, if we were to make an effort to teach men the things that are naturally imprinted on their souls when God decided to make them men, we could save the lives of many misguided boys. Save them from isolation, save them from suicide, loneliness and the pain of confusion. And through that, we could help society get back on its feet, and ensure the leaders of tomorrow know who they are, know why they’re here, and know what they’re supposed to do and how they’re supposed to act.
A man’s duty is an extensive topic, and it’s not easy to pinpoint clearly in just one article —not even in one whole blog— but I believe you can reframe your mind and your understanding of masculinity somewhat easily. When you realize and accept one of the central truths of your role as a man, which we’ll cover in this article, you’ll be free to play that role properly, grow as a masculine man under God, build yourself into a leader of other men, and ensure you give your family, loved ones, and community, the very best of you.
